Geography

Take a look at the Geography that goes on in our school...

Geography at Bickershaw Church of England Primary School

Our aim in Geography is to encourage children to step outside their comfort zone in order to explore the wider world and to be inspired by cultures, natural wonders and their local community to develop a sense of self identity and understanding of the world in which they live.

Our Geography curriculum will be underpinned by the drivers of heritage, initiative and possibilities.

  1. Heritage- Study the local area and immerse themselves in the community through looking at maps, carrying out field work and recorgnising human and physical features.
  2. Initiative- Ask geographical questions and take part in enquiry based learning to develop the skills to be critical and independent thinkers when analysing conclusions drawn from field work and mapping skills.
  3. Possibility- By learning about different locations around the world and the opportunity that travel can give them to step outside their local area and experience something new.  The children learn to be ambassadors for the local community and environment.

All children will develop skills to:

  • ask and answer geographical questions.
  • plan and carry out field work investigations, using maps and other equipment such as compasses and ICT.
  • draw conclusions based on field work.
  • know and locate continents, oceans and countries around the world.
  • become more familiar with the geography in the UK.
  • learn about the local area, and compare their life in this area with that in other regions in the United Kingdom and to other regions in the world.
  • know and understand natural processes and phenomena such as the seasons, the water cycle, volcanoes, rivers ect.
